Five picks for today, 2010.10.15:
San Jose Sharks @ Washington Capitals: Washington Capitals 3Way (1X2) +135 (2,35) Bookmaker
Colorado Avalanche @ Montreal Canadiens: Montreal Canadiens 3Way (1X2) +110 (2,10) Bookmaker
Los Angeles Kings @ Detroit Red Wings: Under 6 -115 (1,87) Bookmaker
Chicago Blackhawks @ Nashville Predators: Chicago Blackhawks PL -1,5 +236 (3,36) 5Dimes
St. Louis Blues @ Phoenix Coyotes: St. Louis Blues ML +104 (2,04) 5Dimes, Pinnacle
On BetPhoenix You can get STL ML +105 (2,05). If CHI PL is too much for your heart, on 5Dimes/Pinnacle You can get Chicago Blackhawks ML -120 (1,83). Or on Bookmaker You can get Chicago Blackhawks 3Way (1X2) +130 (2,30).
NHL 3 Way lines and European Ice Hockey (Draw line quote) lines are played like in soccer, regulation time only, overtime not included. Since you're only playing RT, regulation time, it is possible to bet the draw. The result after the 3rd period is what you are betting (Win, Lose, or Draw).
NHL 3 way and European Ice Hockey is settled without overtime (60 minutes of play only) for the main quote (Away/Home/Draw/Total). This option does NOT include overtime or a shootout.
Bookmaker (and Diamond (DSI)) offers 3 different types of lines for Hockey; The Canadian Line, 3-Way Option, and Straight Money Lines. If I'm not wrong, the Canadian Line seems to be the same as the Puck Line (-1.5 goals), like the Run Line in MLB (-1.5 runs), or an Asian Handicap -1.5 in soccer. Usually 5Dimes also has NHL 3 Way lines.

Atlanta Thrashers @ New Jersey Devils
Today, the Atlanta Thrashers are in the middle of a roadtrip. In the 3 games they already played, they only lost in Ottawa, showing a good offensive game in the other 2 games. However, the other 2 teams were the Saint Louis Blues and the Bay Lightning, 2 teams that are not among the elite of the NHL for sure. So, we can conclude that they still have something to proof.
Atlanta will probable start with Pavelec as goaltender, who is at least with 3.00 goals or more conceded per game in any season. I think that we have here a valuable team for the future, which will be a good dog in same games. However, they still have to find their best game. In 3 games played, they had showed a big dependence on Kovalchuk, whom has almost half of the goals scored by the Thrashers.
The New Jersey Devils will start with Brodeur. I think that no one will raise against me if I say that he's one of the bests goaltenders in the league. This year, the Devils have already played 5 games, losing the first 2 at home against opponents that are doing very well in this start of the season. Then, they went in a roadtrip for 3 games, and they have won them all. The last one, was a win over the Capitals in SO. So, i think that the Devils are starting to find their game, and they can't stay much more time without winning at home. Thus, the Devils just have 2 things to improve this season so far: winning at home and get more from their offense.
While New Jersey has faced difficult opponents, like the Rangers, the Flyers or the Capitals, the Thrashers had encountered only "easy" teams, the stats about their goals for or against are not reliable yet. On the other hand, even with Atlanta taking advantage in their PP, the Devils are strong on their defense against that kind of situations.
I expect an easy game for the New Jersey Devils, which are the better team, they need to give a victory for their supporters and they have a gold opportunity to make it, and improve their offensive results in the process. The Atlanta Thrashers have already made a good start, with a 2-1 record, but they had proof nothing, and Kovalchuk can't be the wild card or joker of the team in every game.
Pick: New Jersey Devils 3Way (1X2) +100 (2,00) Bookmaker

New York Islanders @ Buffalo Sabres
There isn't much to say about this game. The New York Islanders are still chasing their first win, the Buffalo Sabres still are without a loss in regular time. It seems an easy game, BUT...
The Islanders are improving since the last season. They are playing well and deserve a win, because they only lost 1 game in regular time. They are a young team, and they know how important is winning a game as soon as possible. And they have the talent to do it. If the fact that they are a young team seems to make them lose control of the games, that isn't what their losses only in overtime really say. They can "build" their game paciently.
The Sabres are a team that can do their best or their worst. They will be without Vanek, their best player. After a glorious winning over Boston, this team will problably will have an excess of confidence for this game and that can be a mistake. The truth is that they have a poor offense, only the last game was a party, and because Boston wanted to party.
I expect a very tight game, with the Islanders having a big advantage on PP situations. They can play smartly this game and wait for the oportunities to come. Buffalo has more confidence in this game, but i think that they can't keep the momentum from the last game flowing again so soon. And Miller, who will probably start, can't make the difference for ever. So I think that the New York Islanders have here the oportunity to get their first win, even if it comes on OT or SO.
Pick: New York Islanders ML +165 (2,65) Bookmaker, Legendz

St. Louis Blues @ Anaheim Ducks: Anaheim Ducks 3Way (1X2) +115 (2,15) Bookmaker
BOS ML +105 on 5dimes is another option for those who don't have a sportsbook with 3Way lines. Those who love the adrenaline of high odds, they might want to play ATL 3Way +180 (2,80) Bookmaker or COL 3Way +215 (3,15) Bookmaker. I really like both, but these odds are lower than those provided by some european sportbooks, which are unavailable to US sports bettors.

San Jose Sharks @ New York Rangers
New York Rangers will host this Monday after an easy win in Toronto the San Jose Sharks. I understand that this game seems too tight. Being a soft dog, there is some temptation to back San Jose. However, I can find a lot of value on Rangers 3WAY. These odds give us a plus signal for a team that has won this year all games at home. And until now, the Rangers didn't need to play an overtime in order to win a game this season. And if i believe in the Rangers to win, 3Way has the value we need to back them.
Why?
New York Rangers started this season in Pittsburgh, losing by one goal only against the actual champions. Since then, they won all the 7 games they played. They are hot in their offensive game and strong in defense. They just play as a team, improving from the last year, and finally make us believe that they can get a season as their supporters just want to. Gaborik was a amazing addiction, after struggling with an injury last season on Minnesota Wild.
They just score about 4.00 goals per game, as much as Atlanta, the most powerful scoring teams this season. Even in Defense, they just allow 1.88 goals per game, the second best record on NHL. This show us how good they are, but more impressive, is the fact that they are balanced! Top 3 on offense and defense.
San Jose Sharks are 4-3-1 this season, 2-3 away. Let's face one fact: only the win at Anaheim Ducks give them some credit. They are showing a defensive game away, that no one could guess when the league began. Even their offensive with some good added players struggles some days, showing that they have some issues, because they have talent for more. With those first lines, they can't be as they are, in the middle of the scoring ranks, with 3.12 goals per game. Their defense is in the middle as well, allowing 2.75 goals per game.
In short, we see two teams in different situations. The Sharks with a wonderful squad, theoretically stronger than last year, but showing a hockey below the expectations. The Rangers, a team that had their problems last year, shows now a strong game, and proves that they can rehab some players they acquired. The Rangers have the "momentum" with them. They are strong, they have confidence, and they believe that they can win this game just by presenting their current hockey. They are 8-0 ATS this season, they usually win when they host Sharks, and the home team is 3-0 after 2 days rest, when the Sharks are 0-2 in the same days rest period.
About the PP situations, they are a little bit even, some percentage as offensive, however the Sharks have some troubles defending PP.
With the momentum, home advantage, the confidence and power on the Rangers side, I will back their side.
Pick: New York Rangers 3Way (1X2) +135 (2.35) Bookmaker

Los Angeles Kings @ Dallas Stars
Los Angeles Kings will finally end their road trip. After 5 games on the road they will return to home after this game. There is not much to say. Kings gives an early hope for LA fans, but they start to fade after the 4-1 in 5 first games. They won at Saint Louis Blues and New York Islanders, but i think that it is wrong to give to much credit to the Kings, after all those teams are easy prey. The truth is they are now 0-3 in the last 3 games and they just want to return home. They aren't defending well and their great offensive at the beginning of the season is falling off.
Dallas Stars just lost one game in regular time, 0-3 in their last game at home, against the Boston Bruins. They are 3-1-0-3, 3 losses after SO, but are coming from a great win at Chicago by 4-3. I think that Dallas is a better team and the difference between both rosters is pretty visible.
The LA Kings have 2/3 of the team with flu symptoms, that's for sure not the best condition to play. They are tired, almost 10 days out on the road. On their last game, they had 0 for 5 with the man advantage, that show us how mistrust they are. With a good first line, who can't see Dallas Starts win by 2 or more goals?
Pick: Dallas Stars PL -1.5 +212 (3.12) 5Dimes, DAL PL -1.5 +210 (3.10) The Greek

Vancouver Canucks @ Edmonton Oilers
Vancouver Canucks will face today a Northwest Division rival, the Edmonton Oilers. So, we shouldn't analyse any trends because in this game anything can happen, but if we want to find here a spot to pick, it should be only about how teams are. The Canucks, 0-3 when playing away. The Oilers, have lost 2 games at home in 5. Both of them hosted the rivals Calgary Flames.
Edmonton is playing well as they get stronger game after game. They lost 2 of their 3 first season games, both of them at home against the rivals Flames. Since then, they only lost at Chicago against the Blackhawks. That 3 losses, were by the minimum margin. They are playing well, scoring 3.86 goals per game, and keeping a good defense.
Vancouver is getting stronger at offense after game after game, but they are not reliable at defense. As visitors, they lost all their games for 2 or more goals. The last game they went out, it was against a rival too, the Flames, and end up losing 3-5.
So, we have here a game between two different teams. The Canucks only see forward, but Oilers can see offense as well as defense. For Oilers, we will have Hemsky returning, and Souray is questionable yet. For Canucks, D. Sedin, and Salo will join Demitra in the injured/disabled list.
Between a team strong on both sides of the field, with the best players at the game and the need to make their first derby win, this should be a relatively easy game. Vancouver don't know yet how to win on the road and still has to improve the defense. Sedin and Salo are important missing players. I even think Khabibulin is a better goaltender and in a better shape than Luongo.
If this game was not so important for both teams (Canucks need to win outside, Oilers need to win against a rival at home), and a derby, then the over would be a great play as well. But this will be a hot game, to enjoy and push for Oilers. They are confident, and the Canucks should feel the absences of D. Sedin and Salo.
Pick: Edmonton Oilers 3Way (1X2) +135 (2.35) Bookmaker

St. Louis Blues @ Pittsburgh Penguins
Let‘s go to the West Coast... Now let‘s go to the East Coast... And this is the recent life of the St. Louis Blues team this week. It can be hard especially when the second team is the Pittsburgh Penguins. Even when the Blues are good on the road, losing only one game on OT in 3 games. But this year, the Penguins improved their defense. With that good defense, they are showing that they only need a few shoots to score, winning easily the majority of the games, sitting on a 7-1 record.
I know that St. Louis comes from a great win over the Anaheim Ducks, however they had made a big travel prior to this game. The Penguins had lost one game at home, against the Phoenix Coyotes, their only loss at the moment, and they can‘t compromise another game at home so soon. I see that the edge on this game is on the Penguins. Their roster... well, advantage number one. They are better defenders than the Blues, advantage number two. They can score as much as the Blues, but only need half of the shoots, advantage number three.
The Puck Line is a good bet, the accuracy of the Penguins centers, is one of the best on the NHL. If they are winning only by one goal difference at the end, Pittsburgh is a reliable team to score another goal on an empty net situation. So, even if they only scored one more goal than the Blues during 58 minutes, we can expect another goal at the last minutes to make our PL a winner.
Pick: Pittsburgh Penguins PL -1.5 +180 (2.80) Bookmaker

Columbus Blue Jackets @ Calgary Flames
A week after, Columbus Blue Jackets will face Calgary Flames again. In the first match up of the season Columbus won 2-1 at home. Now, it's their turn to make the trip. Fortunately they had 3 days off, so they could have some rest and make a quiet travel. It's important to them to continue this good start of the season, with only 1 loss in 6 games, against the Sharks in San Jose.
The Flames had 4 days rest, which can be too much time to be out in a season start and that can be treacherous. They had a good beginning with 4 wins in a row, but then they went 1-3. Something appears to be wrong: in 8 games, they won 5, all against canadian opponents. They didn't won one game yet at USA floor.
We will have a match up between two teams, where the advantage in the offensive game or the defensive game is with Columbus, as they can defend much better than Calgary. Moreover, Columbus are playing a intelligent hockey, just taking 6 goals at Sharks, but Shark are Stanley Cup contenders and they have a great first line. In the rest of the games, they usually had allowed only one goal per game.
A week ago Calgary scored first, but they could hold it, and lost 2-1, a result that expressed the truth in the field. Actually, Calgary had some problems this year to hold the lead in the games when they are winning. Who can't remember that game in Chicago (5-1 in the first period, 5-5 in the end of regulation time, loss in OT)? So, i will take here the Blue Jackets, they are smarter in the field, they know this Calgary team and they have the potential to show to this mind weak team, how to win a game.
Pick: Columbus Blue Jackets 3Way (1X2) +165 (2,65) Bookmaker, CLB 3Way (1X2) +220 (3,20) bwin

Nashville Predators @ Boston BruinsPredators and Bruins are two teams that we expected more than they had show so far. Nashville has came from a hard game and lost in SO against the Capitals in Washington. Can this game mark the turn? The Bruins, with Lucic and Savard out, comes from a loss in Phoenix against the Coyotes. "Let's explore that spot! Bruins with 2 men out, Predators starting to improve!". I think that this can be so wrong, but so wrong, that i will bet against this thought. The Bruins are the better team. They are returning home, and they don't have a choice... They have to start to please their supporters. If the team can't play well today, against one team that has been lousy in this start of the season, Bruins will lose to much credit in their fans eyes. The experience and depth in Bruins roster can make some difference today. I don't have time today to explain in detail my opinion, I'm with a bloody headache now that I've to take some time off right now, however, I expect a scenario similar to Dallas vs Nashville game, where Nashville lost 6-0. Pick: Boston Bruins PL -1.5 +150 (2.50) 5Dimes, BOS PL -1.5 +145 (2.45) The GreekI also like Vancouver Canucks @ Chicago Blackhawks: Chicago Blackhawks 3Way (1X2) -105 (1,95) Bookmaker & Over 5.5 -120 (1.83) 5 Dimes, Centrebet, Pinnacle, but I need to take a rest now, so please excuse me for not delivering a justification right now.

Buffalo Sabres @ Florida Panthers
I know that the Sabres had made a great start, scoring 6 goals against Detroit, and then they defeated the Islanders. This happened after they appeared to struggle in their offensive game. So, everybody thinked: they are a good team. Line makers even favour them. But i can't understand it. Why is Buffalo favourite? Sabres just played one game on the road. Against Nashville, winning by 1-0. That prove anything? NO! Buffalo still has to show that they know how to play on the road. I admit that Sabres is not a team that I enjoy. It's true that they sometimes play well. But as soon as they do it, they play bad as well.
Florida, won their first game in the season, but then they struggled hard. However, in the last games they tried to bounce back. And in the last game, they won 4-2 at home against the Philadelphia Flyers, a hot team. So, on this game i will take Florida and I will risk a 3WAY line. Florida can do pretty things at home, specially against teams like Sabres, teams that are not reliable on their performances. I think that the bookies are wrong, remembering too much 2 straight games where they scored 6 goals. Are they accounting for public perception? Maybe. The truth is that the Sabres are not a good offensive team and in the end of the season the stats will show it. Florida is getting their confidence back and their game is showing up in the last few games.
Playing at home against a team that only visited a "to much easy prey" (another reason to take them as favourites?), if I have to see advantage somewhere, it will be with the home team. After all, if they won 4-2 against Philadelphia, why not an easy win over Sabres, which are coming from a defeat at home?

Colorado Avalanche @ Minnesota Wild
Colorado Avalanche after two home wins went on a successful road trip (4-2, 1-1 on SO) that ends now on Xcel Energy Center, were they face the Minnesota Wild, which had a road trip of their won, but not as successful as the one of the Avalanche team, because they lost SU all their last 5 matchs, showing a dismal performance on the defense and a weak offense (an average 2.00 goals scored per game).
Minnesota has only won 1 game, at home against the Anaheim Ducks, by 4-3 on SO, and we don't know much more about them on their home field, because they spent the entire season so far on the road, ending with a 0-6 record. What we've seen so far of the Wild doesn't inspire much trust, we have a team that has the pressure to win, but that will also play on a known and confy environment.
On the other hand, we have a Colorado team that will finish their road trip, having won their last 4 games, with their last win against the Detroit Red Wings on SO giving us some signs that they can be trusted, if they have tonight the same commitment displayed on their last games.
So, I'm going to take my chances and support the road dog on their last game, believing that they have the ability to give 60 minutes of effort, since they have shown having much better qualities so far than this Wild team and for this game I give both teams 50-50, as we can't deny the value of Wild's roster on the other side. Take the Colorado Avalanche ML.

Vancouver Canucks @ Chicago Blackhawks
Chicago will host the Canucks today. For me, it will be the best game of the day. This is game that promises goals and good offensive plays for both teams. However, i will go against the Canucks again. 4 losses in 4 games on the road, is not a record to give confidence. And with Salo and D. Sedin missing, it can be a hard game for Vancouver. However, I believe that the Canucks can fight back on this game and this thinking makes me believe that a PL is to risky for this game, but the Over is also a valuable play. Vancouver is a team with good offensive moves. They try a lot to score, shooting at least 33 shots per game. They have proved this year that they can score when they want, and if defense gives a little bit more space, they will not forgive.
Chicago is a team that I enjoy to see. I think they have a great first line and I confess that I enjoy they way to play: their games are always frenetic. A week ago, they won a game in OT after being losing 5-1 in the first period. They like to fight their games, specially at home. They enjoy to give a tremendous show to their supporters, make every fan watch every second of the games without moving out from their seats.
So, with two very offensive teams, we will have an easy over in my opinion. After all, both goaltenders are not making a good season so far. With Salo and D. Sedin out, without winning any game yet on the road and visiting a team that has a fantastic first line, and that scores a lot, I guess they will not keep the scoreboard even for long time.
The Blackhawks have clearly the edge for this game, so I will take them on 3Way. Don't forget that Chicago usually doesn't crush their opponents at home, they score a lot, but they conceed a lot of goals too. They are "pro-show" right now and there is no value to take them on PL, as they are no reliable for building up a nice lead on the game.
Picks: Chicago Blackhawks 3Way (1X2) -105 (1,95) Bookmaker & Over 5.5 -120 (1.83) 5 Dimes, Centrebet, Pinnacle
