DATES : June 12-15 COURSE : Torrey Pines GC South Course, La Jolla, California PAR : 71 YDS : 7,607
THE COURSE
Designed by William Bell, Sr. in 1957. Torrey Pines South Golf Course is home of the Buick Invitational PGA Golf Tournament played at the end of January. Recently renovated by Rees Jones in 2001 the South Course boasts dramatic coastline views as well as some of the most challenging golf in USA. Torrey Pines South signature hole is a beautiful par 3 on hole #3.
Torrey South, the second municipal course to host the Open and the first course not ranked among the top 100 in the U.S. by any of several ranking sources, could play up to 7,643 yards, nearly 400 yards more than any previous U.S. Open examination. It's been altered to a par-71 track with the conversion of the sixth hole from a par-5 to a 515-yard par-4. The Kikuyu grass fairways, which should be drier and yield more roll, will be pinched in to as little as 24 yards across and lined by steely rough measuring from 1 ¾ inches to more than 3 ½ inches. Finally, greens that crawled at 11 on the Stimpmeter will approach speeds of 13 or more.
The last 3 years it would have been easier to find a needle in a haystack than back the winner of the US OPEN before the first drive was struck.
The USGA have made an effort to make the US Open course a serious test, and the winning scores have reflected that. Dont expect this course to play anything like it does in Buick Invitational in January.
I have placed one min stakes bet on JUSTIN LEONARD at 60/1. He did jump off the page at that price as hes coming off a win and has deserved it on his 2008 form which has been very solid. He was 5th in The Buick Invitational in January and has won an Open before (Royal Troon in 1997). His stats this year are excellent, his weakest being driving distance, but he makes up for that with accuracy, greens in reg and putting.
Cracking read from Golf World which reports on the amateurs who took on Torrey Pines to see if they could break 100! T Woods stated last year that for an amatuer "Breaking 100 is no mean feat" This past Friday Matt Lauer 6.2 (NBC)Tony Romo 2.2 (Dalas Quaterback), Justin Timberlake 6.0 (Celeb) and John Atkinson (member of the public) played the course with some interesting results
As far as golf goes, I'm afraid I'd find paint drying more entertaining (I mean if you wanna getta ball in a dinky wee hole, just pick it up and put it there, right? ) - but I did manage to raise a flicker of passing interest from a R5 live report this am about an English amateur, Gary ..Walthamstow?? ...something like that ..who's just sneaked into the comp. Can't find him in the betting tho - are the bookies just slow? or is my long-delayed trip to specsavers responsible for the no-spot?
OUTRIGHT T WOODS 2pts E/W @ 7/2 1pt WIN @ 7/2 ( Too big a price for the world number 1!) V SINGH 0.5pts E/W @ 33/1 (Back to form and putting well. Has had some decent finishes and looks overpriced)
TOP AMERICAN W/O WOODS J KELLY 0.1pts E/W @ 50/1 N WATNEY 0.1pts E/W @ 66/1 D LOVE III 0.1pts E/W @ 50/1
TOP REST OF WORLD V SINGH 0.5pts E/W @ 8/1 (Value Bet for me) A ROMERO 0.2pts E/W @ 20/1
I cant believe people taking 7/2 for Tiger Woods to win. He should be 4/1 to get round 72 holes with that dodgy knee ! I can see him being pulled up after 36.
1 Hicks US -3 1 Streelman US -3 3 Ogilvy Aus -2 3 Appleby Aus -2 3 Axley US -2 3 Mediate US -2 7 Fowler US -1 7 Westwood Eng -1 7 Karlsson Swe -1 7 Els SA -1 7 Allenby Aus -1
Well after an up and down day for many of the top players (Woods, Mickelson, Donald, Singh) I fully expect there to be about 6 players still under par after 2 rounds. Wouldn't suprise me either if they included Lefty and Woods.
Looking forward to some live action after the footy.
Hey Ryor was that the cut for the first round? cos i see he has a score for a second round. but didn't make third round +23 lol... personally i went for garcia e/w he aint doing too well hopefully he pulls out a -4, the first 7holes of the 1st round cost him +6! I have to get out of euro championship mode Actually i don't think i understand the leaderboard from the site i am on...

I think 4.5 with a 3 shot cushion over 3rd, and only 1 behind the leader is a very fair price, even considering its WOODS in front.
WOODS was amazing yesterday and should really be about 4-5 shots back going into the 4th rd. His record winning when leading majors after 3 rds is flawless, but this ones different as hes missed so much golf going into it, and is carrying an injury which is affecting his driving. I think WESTWOOD is playing the course better than anyone and I hope he gets a famous win tonight.
